Haroon Mokhtarzada – Webs

Haroon Mokhtarzada is the co-founder of Webs (formerly FreeWebs). Webs was started with only $2,000 and a single server in the closet. Today, Webs.com has enjoyed five years of steady growth – with millions of members, even more visitors and a lot more more servers!

Here are the notes.

About Haroon

  • Haroon is 28 years old, born in Afghanistan
  • He studied economics at the University of Maryland
  • His parents were immigrants so they didn’t have a network to find jobs so they started businesses

  • Haroon and his two brothers Zeki and Idris started FreeWebs in 2001 with only $2,000 and a server, while studying for undergraduate degrees at the University of Maryland
  • They thought that it might be better to start small and build because they had no idea how to get funding
  • At the time everyone was getting email so they figured that eventually everyone would get websites
  • Their goal was to make it simple and easy to use so that even less advanced users could use it
  • FreeWebs was one of the first sites to offer no forced ads model which allowed growth because it was cutting edge

The Company Today

  • FreeWebs is now just Webs
  • Webs.com has over 20 million websites hosted and 20,000 new ones everyday which brings in annual earnings of over $5 million per year
  • There is a premium service offered which includes a domain name, email services, extra items in your web store, extra storage space or bandwidth for $5-$25 a month
  • This service is partnered with Google and gives customers free AdWords credits which means customers can advertise their site via Google’s advertising system for free

Future Goals/Projects

  • Haroon plans to do public interest work, like running a charitable organization
  • He is interested in creating a new way for groups and organizations to interact online
  • He started www.pagii.com which is a social expression tool that is completely drag and drop, unstructured and unfettered. It is targeted for youth who want to share pictures and other content in a new way

Tips For Young Entrepreneurs

  • One person can benefit the lives of many people if they have the will to do so
  • It is okay to go in business with family and friends depending on the relationship
  • Entrepreneurship is something that can be learned, you don’t have to be “born with it”
  • Set up business analytics earlier so you can track progress and see warnings quickly
  • “Less is more!”

Setting Up Your First Business

  • Launch early and fast and get it in front of the people
  • Don’t try to do everything right away
  • Get something out there and get feedback from customers as cheaply and quickly as possible then assess your next step
  • Try to pick something you can scale, where you can serve a lot of people without hiring a lot of people

Haroon’s Role Models

  • Steve Jobs, Co-Founder of Apple Inc.
  • Max Levchin, Paypal
  • Mark Zuckerburg, Co-Founder of Facebook
